Historical Overview

January 1965

Established the Laboratory Animal Breeding Farm at the Shanghai Institutes of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, based on the animal facilities of various "Sheng" (species) institutes within the Chinese Academy of Sciences

1979

Renamed as the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Laboratory Animal Center, marking the formal incorporation of laboratory animal science into the Chinese Academy of Sciences system.

April 1982

Under the document No. (82) Ke Fa Sheng Zi 0314 issued by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the "Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences" was established based on the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, becoming one of China's three major laboratory animal centers.

1985

Constructed the country’s first SPF-grade barrier facility capable of large-scale production, enabling China to produce laboratory animals that meet international standards.

February 1998

The State Science and Technology Commission issued document Guo Ke Cai Zi (1998) 009 to regulate the collection, introduction, preservation, supply, research, and development of laboratory animal resources. This mandated the establishment of the "National Rodent Laboratory Animal Seed Center (Shanghai Branch)," relying on the Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The goal was to organize resources, tap into potential, maximize the use of existing facilities and equipment, leverage technological advantages, strengthen management, and focus on the conservation, breeding, introduction, supply, and related technical R&D of Chinese rodent laboratory animals.

December 2000

The Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was managed directly by the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and integrated into the biosource support system of the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences.

December 2003

The animal production, sales, and service sectors of the Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center formed the "Shanghai Slac Laboratory Animal Co., Ltd." Supported by the strong scientific and technological capabilities of the CAS, the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences, and the Animal Center, this company has now become China’s largest and most reputable domestic brand in the laboratory animal market.

2008

The Shanghai Laboratory Animal Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences participated in establishing the "Chinese Academy of Sciences Animal Experiment Platform," a comprehensive resource integrating laboratory animal services across the academic system. It provides customized, menu-based animal experimental services both within and outside the academy, effectively supporting the scientific research animal experimentation system.

May 2010

To scientifically protect and manage China's laboratory animal resources and ensure experimental germplasm security, the Ministry of Science and Technology approved the establishment of the "National Rabbit Laboratory Animal Seed Center" in reliance on the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Experimental Animal Center). The supporting unit was tasked with strengthening management, supporting the center’s development, and, in accordance with the "Management Measures for National Laboratory Animal Seed Centers," ensuring work in germplasm preservation, breeding, introduction, supply, related technical R&D, and information sharing of laboratory animal resources.

June 2019

The Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Finance jointly issued document Guo Ke Fa Ji (2019) 194, titled "Notice on the List for Optimization and Adjustment of the National Science and Technology Resources Sharing Service Platform," which, relying on the Shanghai Institute of Life Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Experimental Animal Center) and with participation from Shanghai Slac Laboratory Animal Co., Ltd., resulted in the integration of the "National Rodent Laboratory Animal Seed Center (Shanghai Branch)" and the "National Leporid Laboratory Animal Seed Center" to establish the "National Mouse and Rabbit Laboratory Animal Resource Center." The resource center focuses on major national demands and social-economic development, engaging in collection, preservation, and sharing of rodent and rabbit experimental animal resources. It has developed a distinctive profile centered on collecting, preserving, and sharing large quantities of standard animal strains and spontaneous disease models, with supplementary collections of genetically edited animal models. Currently, the resource center conserves over 500 strains of mice and rabbits, 80% of which are research achievements from various domestic scientific institutions.
